Hawthorn. The D-Type was built for racing and was the first
race car to adopt a monocoque chassis; introducing
aircraft-style engineering to motorsport
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR was based partly on the technology
of the successful Grand Prix car. It also had the body of a

The
number 19 car, driven by
legendary driver Juan Manuel
Fangio in the 1955 Le Mans race,
was fitted with an innovative
and distinctive air brake, but
retired early from the race.
